Dog Crate Considerations and Travel Tips

October 20th, 2005 by Jim in Pet Travel, Dog Travel Crates

When vacationing with your doggy, choosing the right pet carrier or crate can make the difference between a happy pet and an unhappy one. Deciding on just the right dog crate for travel is not easy. The choices on the market are varied, and not all of them meet the recommended requirements for road and/or airline travel. So, when purchasing a pet containment device, take the following things into consideration:

Size: First off, look at the size of your pet. Choose a dog travel crate that allows your pet room to move around, yet not so much that they can be jostled about. A good rule of thumb is that your pet must be able to turn around in the crate or carrier.

Ventilation: Another important feature sometimes overlooked is proper ventilation. There should be openings on at least three sides of the crate for air to circulate. If there is not, find something else.

Cargo Area: Depending on your mode of travel, the area in which your pet will be stored will vary. If your mode of travel happens to be an automobile, you must determine the space that is available in your vehicle. Crates come in many sizes and shapes, so factoring in how much space you have in your car will narrow your choices. The proper crate for vehicle travel would be the hard plastic or metal style crate. These crates offer more ventilation and afford the animal the best view. Most of these type crates come with a water dish secured to the side, so make sure your pet has water for the road. Keeping an animal crated while traveling by car will lessen the chance for car sickness.

Mobility: A good thing to keep in mind is that when traveling your pet carrier must function with your mode of travel. If you’re going to be lugging puppy around the airport a lot, you might look for a crate that doubles as luggage–or at least comes with wheels. If you have a smaller animal you may want to choose a soft sided animal carrier. These resemble a long tote bag and are often lined with fleece or sherpa. These carriers are safe and efficient and have great ventilation. Many small dogs and even cats have a tough time traveling due to motion sickness. These soft sided carriers are a wonderful way for an agitated traveling pet to feel more secure. They offer warmth and allow plenty of air and light and also provide a sense of coziness and well being.

“Carry on” Luggage: Airlines require that your pet carrier for smaller animals meet certain requirements. First the carriers must be able to fit under your seat. These carriers also must adapt to the size of the airplane you will be traveling on. A smaller jet or propeller plane will have less space under the seat so of course your carrier will need to be smaller than one you would take on a larger jet. You should always consult the airlines for regulations before traveling with your pet.
